FH® Salt Bath Furnace Combined Charging Baskets
Key Benefits
- Modular / Combination Design
Interlocking base, side walls, dividers, and hanging frames – configure multiple basket sizes from one set of components. - Salt-Bath Specific Design
Optimized open area for rapid salt drainage when lifting from furnace – minimizes salt carryout and drag-out losses. - Corrosion-Resistant Materials
Special alloys selected for molten salt environments (chloride, nitrate, cyanide, or neutral salt baths) – resists pitting and intergranular attack. - Thermal Shock Resistant
Engineered to withstand repeated immersion into 500–1050°C molten salt followed by quenching – no cracking or distortion. - Quick Drainage Geometry
Sloped or tapered bottom bars, large drainage openings, and non-stick surfaces – salt flows off rapidly, reducing cooling and solidification on the basket. - Easy Maintenance & Repair
Modular components can be replaced individually – no need to discard the entire basket when one section wears out.

Every kilogram of salt carried out of the furnace costs money and creates housekeeping issues. FH® salt bath baskets feature:
- Minimum 60% open bottom area
- Tapered or rounded bars – salt runs off instead of clinging
- Smooth, non-stick surface finish
- Optimized lifting speed recommendations

FAQ:
Q1: Why do I need a special basket for salt bath furnaces? Can't I use my regular hardening basket?
A: Regular baskets are not designed for molten salt. They trap salt in corners and closed sections, leading to:
- Excessive salt carryout (waste and mess)
- Salt solidification inside tubes or hollow sections (impossible to clean)
- Accelerated corrosion from stagnant salt
- Thermal shock cracking
FH® salt bath baskets feature open drainage, non-stick surfaces, and corrosion-resistant alloys.
Q2: What does "modular" mean and why is it useful?
A: Modular means the basket is built from interchangeable components – base, side walls, dividers, inserts. Benefits:
- One base works with different side heights and dividers
- Change configuration for different part sizes without buying a new basket
- Replace only worn sections instead of the entire basket
- Easier cleaning – disassemble for full access
Q3: How do I prevent salt from sticking to the basket after removal?
A: Three factors:
- Design – open bottom and tapered bars allow salt to drain quickly
- Surface finish – smooth, non-stick surface (shot-blasted or pre-oxidized)
- Lifting speed – withdraw slowly (2–4 seconds per 100 mm) to allow drainage
FH® baskets are optimized for all three.
Q4: How do I clean salt residue from the basket?
A: After each use, allow the basket to cool and then:
- Soak in hot water to dissolve nitrate/nitrite salts (catch rinse water – do not drain to sewer without treatment)
- For chloride/cyanide salts, follow your plant's safety procedure (typically water rinse with neutralization)
- Light bead blasting for stubborn residue
Never use carbon steel brushes – they leave embedded particles that promote corrosion.
Q5: Can I use the same basket for different salt types (e.g., nitrate and chloride)?
A: Not recommended. Cross-contamination can:
- Create hazardous chemical reactions (e.g., nitrate + cyanide)
- Accelerate corrosion
We recommend dedicated baskets per salt type. FH® can mark baskets by salt type for clear identification.
Q6: The basket will be lifted by an overhead hoist. Do you provide lifting lugs?
A: Yes. All FH® salt bath baskets include a hanging frame or bail with reinforced lifting lugs. We need your lifting hook type and clearance height to design proper engagement.
Q7: Can I get a perforated insert for very small parts (e.g., 2 mm pins)?
A: Yes. We offer removable perforated inserts or fine mesh liners that drop into the modular basket. Perforation size from 1 mm upward. The insert is removable for cleaning and part unloading.
Q8: What is your warranty?
A: 12 months against manufacturing defects (weld cracks, material flaws, poor fit of modules). Corrosion and thermal fatigue are process-dependent and not covered – but FH® will recommend the right material for your specific salt bath to maximize life.
