I. Core Concept and Operating Principle
1. What is a Pallet Furnace?
- It is a continuous heat treatment furnace featuring a closed, looped track inside or alongside it. One or more Pallets function as independent "mobile carts," driven by a drive mechanism (e.g., chain, friction wheel, linear motor) along this track. They cycle through all workstations: loading, heating, soaking, quenching, washing, tempering, and unloading.
2. Fixture Core: The Pallet System
- Pallet: This is not only the load tray carrying the workpieces but also a conveyance unit with its own travel mechanism (e.g., wheels, skids).
- Track System: A fixed path that precisely guides the pallet's movement, including straight sections, curves, lifters, and transfer cars.
- Drive and Positioning System: Ensures pallets start, stop, and transfer at the correct time and location.
3. Core Advantages:
- Extreme Flexibility and Controllable Cycle Time: Each pallet is an independent unit that can be routed between different lines as needed by the process, easily enabling multi-product, variable-cycle production.
- Full Automation: Requires no manual intervention from loading to unloading, making it a model for "unmanned workshops."
- Excellent Sealing and Atmosphere Control: Advanced sealing techniques (e.g., sand seal, roller seal, flexible seal) can be used between the pallet and furnace body, resulting in low atmosphere loss and high stability.
II. Material Selection
- Main Frame & Wheel Axles: RA330 is the primary choice, balancing high strength, creep resistance, and carburization resistance. Inconel 601 is considered for very high-temperature zones (>1000°C).
- Wheels/Bearings: Wheels use RA330 or high-chromium cast iron; bearings require special high-temperature solid lubricants (e.g., molybdenum disulfide, graphite) or must be designed as simple structures with larger clearances.
- Skids: Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, or graphite-containing composite ceramic materials with self-lubricating properties.
- Track: RA330 structural sections or high-chromium wear-resistant cast iron.
III. Typical Applications:
- Automotive Components: Carburizing & quenching, induction hardening & tempering lines for gears, CV joints, drive shafts, steering knuckles.
- Bearings: Austempering lines for bearing rings and rollers.
- Fasteners: Quench & temper lines for bolts, nuts.
IV. Summary
Pallet furnace fixtures represent the highest level of automation and systematization in continuous heat treatment tooling. They are not isolated fixtures but intelligent logistics units integrating mechanical drive, thermal sealing, and precise positioning.
Their value lies in transforming discrete "load-treat-unload" actions into a seamless, endlessly circulating production flow directed by digital programs. Investing in a pallet furnace system is not just purchasing equipment; it is adopting a "production logistics philosophy." Its successful operation depends on the ultimate pursuit of the trinity of "mechanical reliability, thermal stability, and system controllability." It can be said that "the flow of pallets sets the rhythm of production."
