Custom Heat Treatment Basket System for Italian Customer | FH® Alloy

Custom Cast Heat Treatment Baskets with Grid Trays and Wire Mesh for an Italian Customer
Customer Case Study | Wuxi Junteng Fanghu Alloy Technology Co., Ltd. (FH® Alloy)

Project Overview

An Italian customer placed an additional order with FH® Alloy for 8 heat treatment baskets, together with 16 matching grid trays and 16 wire mesh inserts for heat treatment use.

The customer required a complete solution including the basket frame, matching inner grid trays, and wire mesh components. Based on the customer’s technical requirements, FH® Alloy designed a cast heat treatment basket system and completed the full process from engineering design to manufacturing, final inspection, and delivery.

This project is a good example of how FH® Alloy supports customers not only with standard production, but also with customized basket systems for specific furnace conditions and loading requirements.

Customer Requirements
The Italian customer required the following:

  • Additional quantity: 8 pcs heat treatment baskets
  • Matching accessories: 16 pcs grid trays + 16 pcs wire meshes
  • Basket overall size: 900 × 900 × 150 mm
  • Grid tray wire diameter: 4 mm
  • Grid tray mesh opening: 58 × 58 mm
  • Grid tray requirement: must be flat, without crossed wires
  • Wire mesh wire diameter: 2 mm
  • Wire mesh opening: 5 × 5 mm
  • Maximum working temperature: 600°C
  • Cooling method: Natural cooling
  • Load capacity: 120 kg per basket

The customer also indicated that the basket could be designed in the form of a cast basket, similar to the attached concept, or FH® Alloy could also recommend a welded basket solution if needed.
After reviewing the application, FH® Alloy developed a cast heat treatment basket design that matched the project requirements.

Engineering Design Solution
Based on the customer’s requirements, FH® Alloy designed a complete basket system consisting of:

  • Cast Heat Treatment Basket
  • Grid Tray
  • Wire Mesh Insert
  • Grid Tray + Wire Mesh Combination

The final design focused on the following key points:
1. Cast Basket Structure
The main basket was designed as a cast heat treatment basket with an outer size of 900 × 900 × 150 mm.
The cast structure offers:

  • good dimensional stability,
  • reliable load-bearing performance,
  • long-term service strength,
  • and suitability for repeated heat treatment cycles.

2. Flat Grid Tray Design

The inner grid tray was designed according to the customer’s special requirement:

  • wire diameter: 4 mm
  • mesh opening: 58 × 58 mm
  • must remain flat
  • no crossed wire structure

This requirement was important because the customer needed a stable and even support surface inside the basket.

3. Fine Wire Mesh Insert
The additional wire mesh insert was designed with:

  • wire diameter: 2 mm
  • mesh opening: 5 × 5 mm

This finer mesh helps better support smaller workpieces or prevent parts from falling through the larger grid tray structure.

4. Matched Combination Structure
FH® Alloy also developed the combined design of the grid tray and wire mesh, ensuring that the internal structure fits the cast basket properly and works as a complete assembly during actual use.

3D Design and Project Development
The project included a full design process before production.

  • Image 1: Final 3D model of the cast heat treatment basket
  • Image 2: Wire mesh model
  • Image 3: Combined model of the grid tray and wire mesh

These design models helped confirm the product structure, internal arrangement, and compatibility between each component before manufacturing.
By developing the design in advance, FH® Alloy ensured that the final basket system would meet the customer’s requirements for:

  • size,
  • loading capacity,
  • internal component fit,
  • service temperature,
  • and practical use in production.

Application Conditions

This basket system was designed for a working temperature of up to 600°C with natural cooling.
Compared with higher-temperature applications such as 900°C or 1200°C furnace tooling, this project focused more on:

  • stable structural support,
  • practical basket assembly,
  • proper internal component matching,
  • and repeated handling performance.

Each basket needed to support 120 kg, so the design had to provide sufficient strength while maintaining practical usability.

Why the Cast Basket Solution Was Recommended
The customer mentioned that both cast and welded basket forms could be considered.
After evaluating the requirements, FH® Alloy designed the project as a cast heat treatment basket system because this structure can provide several advantages:

  • better overall rigidity,
  • cleaner and more integrated basket structure,
  • stable repeatability for batch production,
  • good compatibility with matching internal trays and wire mesh,
  • and reliable performance for heat treatment applications.

For customers with different budgets or production preferences, FH® Alloy can also recommend welded basket solutions when appropriate.

Manufacturing Process
After the design was confirmed, FH® Alloy arranged production for the complete order:

  • 8 pcs cast heat treatment baskets
  • 16 pcs grid trays
  • 16 pcs wire mesh inserts

Production was carried out according to the approved design, with attention to:

  • basket dimensional accuracy,
  • tray flatness,
  • correct wire diameters,
  • required mesh openings,
  • assembly compatibility,
  • and overall structural quality.

Final Inspection and Delivery

Before shipment, all products went through final inspection to confirm:

  • basket overall dimensions,
  • load-related structural integrity,
  • flatness of the grid trays,
  • mesh specification compliance,
  • matching accuracy between baskets, trays, and wire meshes,
  • and overall manufacturing quality.

After passing inspection, the products were prepared for delivery to the customer.
This project once again demonstrated FH® Alloy’s ability to provide a complete custom service from design to production and shipment.
